How long will a session take?
The first session of Structural Integration will take about two hours of your time. About a half hour for us to get to know each other, fill out history forms, and do some basic body awareness activities, an hour for the hands on manipulation, and you will probably want another half hour for yourself to relax and go for a walk before jumping back into your hectic life. You should probably plan on 90 minutes for the following sessions although they may very from 50 to 75 minutes. It is best if you can avoid feeling rushed after a session.
What can I expect during a session?
It is very hard to predict what one will experience during and after a session. Each person is unique and the work effects them individually. Also if we have expectations of what we are supposed to experience we may not notice the unexpected when it happens. I think it is best to come with an open mind and be present to whatever happens. That being said, a typical session involves a brief check in time where we talk about what is going on, a time to take before and after pictures if warranted, a few minutes of awareness activity, then we get to the manipulation and educational work.
What should I wear?
Before I get to clothing, please wear no scents. Perfumes, scented laundry detergents and other non-natural scents can trigger some people. I try to make my office a safe place for all.
Traditional attire is underwear for men, and, a bra and underwear for women. It is important for me to be able to see your physical structure and the changes that occur to it during the session, but is also important for you to feel comfortable during the session.
Briefs are preferable to boxers for men; traditional panties and bra work well for women. If you’re not comfortable with this stage of undress, other options are available. A pair of loose-fitting, short, cotton gym shorts, or yoga-type stretchy shorts, are good options. Just keep the following in mind:
- You must be comfortable. Unlike massage, SI requires you to get up from the table and walk around periodically.
- Clothing should not pinch or bind. If you can lie on the table and pull one knee to your chest without resistance, you’re in good shape.
- Clothing should allow us to view and work around your upper legs, mid-back, and neck. Sports bras are difficult to navigate around the mid-back and sides.
- Avoid heavy lycra. Bicycle shorts, girdles, and other garments containing lycra are nearly impossible to work through. It’s also a good idea to bring some work-out clothes (shorts and a tee-shirt) if we want to incorporate stretches using yoga mats, balance balls, or other training equipment.
Please wear what you feel is appropriate and comfortable for you.
How do I pay?
Fees for sessions are usually $140 with payment at time of session. Most major Credit Cards accepted. Insurance companies rarely cover this work in Virginia. Health Savings Accounts accepted.
I give discounts for children, students, and families. I also give discounts for teachers, firefighters, those in public service and safety, and non-profit/volunteer work.
